Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL

The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.

The Research Group Dendrosciences uses tree rings to investigate and understand environmental impacts on tree growth and to reconstruct past environmental changes at scales ranging from minutes to millennia and from cells to ecosystems around the globe. From 1 January 2026, we offer a 6-month position as a

Temporary employee for tree-ring measurements 80-100% (f/m/d)

You will be responsible for the preparation, measurement, and cross-dating of tree cores from four species (spruce, pine, oak, and beech) from across Switzerland. The work is part of the project SAD-TREE (https://www.wsl.ch/en/projects/sad-tree), which aims to empirically disentangle atmospheric vs. soil drought impacts on intra- and inter-annual tree growth, and mechanistically model drought constraints on intra- and inter-annual growth dynamics. You will be part of a very enthusiastic and ambitious project team that includes leading experts in the field. The position is for 6 months and is aimed at recent graduates.
You possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in forest ecology, environmental sciences, or an equivalent field. Knowledge in tree-ring width measurements, cross-dating, and other tree-ring related approaches is an asset. You like routine work in the laboratory, as well as at the computer. You work carefully and independently, and have a high level of diligence and team spirit.
