Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL

The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.

The Research Unit Forest Health and Biotic Interactions investigates the influence of biotic and abiotic factors on forest health and develops the scientific foundations for the protection of forests and their biodiversity. In the Forest Entomology group, we offer from mid April to mid October 2025 (or upon agreement) a 6-months paid

Internship on Insect-Oak interactions 80-100% (f/m/d)

As part of the Phytoakmeter project, the interaction between herbivore insects and oak trees will be investigated. You will support various experiments in the greenhouse and lab, help to conduct feeding bioassays with insects, including aphids and caterpillars, and to maintain caterpillar and aphid colonies. You will also be involved in collecting and processing phytochemical samples. The experimental part of the project includes greenhouse experiments and possibly also fieldwork in Central Germany.

Through this internship you will gain hands-on experience in the laboratory and greenhouse. You will also gain insight into how to successfully conduct feeding experiments with insects, insect rearing and how to collect and process phytochemical samples for metabolomics analyses.
You have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in biology, environmental sciences, or a related field. You have a flair for insects and plants and preferably have experience working in the field, lab and greenhouse. You are used to work in a team and speak English. Speaking German or French and holding a driver’s license Cat. B are of advantage.
