WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF
The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and thus of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards. WSL employs approximately 600 people, of whom 140 work at SLF in Davos.

The Group Mountain Ecosystems within the Research Unit Alpine Environ-ments and Natural Hazards investigates how climate change and land use af-fects the diversity and functioning of alpine ecosystems and is offering from June 2024 – September/October 2024 (4 months) an
Internship "Effects of novel enemies on alpine plants" 80-100% (w/m/d)

Climate change might lead to novel biotic interactions, such as the ones between plants and herbivores or pathogens. These novel interactions could profoundly influence how species and communities respond to changing conditions. Novel interactions occur if species shift their ranges at different rates following climate change. However, the impact that novel plant-enemy interactions will have on species’ responses to climate change is currently unknown.

We will establish a multi-species transplant experiment within an existing global insect, fungal pathogen, and mollusc exclusion experiment ( along an elevational gradient in the region of Davos. Focal alpine plants will be exposed to either their current or future enemies, under climates ranging from conditions experienced today to those that are predicted to occur in the Alps over the next 100 years.

The experimental sites are located at 2600m, 2000m and 1600m elevation, and accessible either by car or cable car. In a small team you will help preparing and conducting the transplant experiment and support the maintenance of the BugNet exclusion experiment. In addition, you will assist in other tasks within the BugNet project, such the assessment of species traits, collection of seeds, or sample preparation and organization.

We offer an inclusive environment in an enthusiastic and diverse team of ecologists, set amidst a stunning mountain environment. The internship takes place in Davos at the SLF and we help in finding housing in Davos.

You should be interested in ecology, be a team player and enthusiastic in doing fieldwork in the mountains, as well as in the lab.You should be fit and confident in working independently in alpine environments and have good organization skills.
