The main tasks of the position will be to (1) assess current trends and needs in both biodiversity and climate science, (2) provide guidance, optimally tailored climate data, and methodological advice to WSL biodiversity researchers and beyond, and (3) study climate change impacts on biodiversity. The scientist is expected to lead the development of new climate data products for biodiversity and ecological science and provides scalable solutions for WSL researchers. The scientist builds and maintains a global pipeline to retrieve climate data from large-scale data infrastructures for on-demand biodiversity analyses and conceptualizes and implements the development of new climate data products useful for climate impact studies in biodiversity, ecology, and other environmental domains. The scientist represents WSL’s expertise in climate-biodiversity impact science at international meetings, conferences, boards, or initiatives and establishes relationships with partners and stakeholders.
You have a PhD degree in natural sciences. You have a proven and extended knowledge of the (inter-)national scientific environment in both biodiversity and climate sciences. Additionally, you have in-depth knowledge in both the field of macroecology and climatology, and proven experience in scientific project management. You also have a track record of international cooperation, and you are experienced to set up inter(national) collaborative research projects. You have a good knowledge of at least one national language and very good written and spoken English skills. You have experience in acquiring third party funding, and in the supervision of staff and students. You are proficient in setting up large data infrastructures, in using large computing infrastructures such as high-performance cluster computers and cloud infrastructures and you are fluent in major programming languages such as R, Phyton, or C++. You have experience in publishing and curating large (global) data sets.
You have an outstanding demonstrated capability of writing scientific papers. You are ambitious and highly motivated, used to a high standard of independent, structured, and careful work, and demonstrate a high level of team spirit. And you are willing to travel sometimes frequently in response to the above listed expectations.
