WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF

The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and thus of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards. WSL employs approximately 600 people, of whom 140 work at SLF in Davos.

The Research Unit Alpine Environment and Natural Hazards studies relationships between climate, land-use and biodiversity. In the framework of the new WSL Biodiversity Center, the research group ‘Mountain Ecosysteme’ is searching for the duration of one year, starting in late autumn 2022, for a (f/m/d)
PostDoc on “Impacts of woody encroachment on habitat structures and biodiversity in Switzerland” (80-100%)
Mitigating the loss of biodiversity is a challenge for policy and conservation given current unprecedented rates of environmental change. In this project, you are analysing the relationships between tree and shrub expansion, habitat diversity and plant species diversity in Switzerland. Modelled vegetation height based on historical aerial stereo images, covering 40 years of woody encroachment and forest expansion with a 1-m-resolution, will be combined with existing biodiversity data. You will work in a consortium with several research groups at WSL in Davos and Birmensdorf. The work will be in close collaboration with a related Postdoc project on land-use intensification and biodiversity supported by the Biodiversity Center (for more details please visit project overview (https://www.wsl.ch/en/projects/postdoc-projects-biodiversity-in-cultural-landscapes.html).
You hold a Doctoral degree in biology, ecology, botany, environmental sciences or a related field. You are familiar with statistical models that relate spatial and temporal changes with environmental factors, and you are experienced in handling large data sets (particularly with R) and in writing scientific publications. Good written and oral communication skills in English and German are required. You are motivated and a team player. Independence and a well-organized and efficient way of working are a matter of course for you.

Please send your complete application until end of May to Clemens Güdel, Human Resources WSL/SLF, by uploading the requested documents on our webpage. If you are interested in either of the above projects, please indicate it in your cover letter. Applications via email will not be considered. Christian Rixen (phone: +41 (0)81 417 02 14, email: rixen(at)slf.ch) will be happy to answer any questions or offer further information. The WSL strives to increase the proportion of women in its employment, which is why qualified women are particularly called upon to apply for this position.
