The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.
The Research Unit Biodiversity and Conservation Biology studies the diversity of life in its various forms, from genetic diversity to the diversity of species and ecosystems as well as their interactions. The Evolutionary Genetics Group (EGG) studies how demography and natural selection is shaping the life-histories and the genetic composition of plant populations across the landscape. The group uses field experiments, statistical models, and computer simulations to answer fundamental evolutionary questions and to aid adaptive forest management decisions. From October 1st 2021, or by arrangement, the EGG is offering a position for 3 months as
Trainee in database development and management (m/f/d)
GenDivRange (https://www.wsl.ch/apps/GenDivRange/) is a novel database developed at the EGG with several collaborators. It integrates data from a wide range of taxa and across the world and allows to test different hypotheses about the evolution of species range limits. Three types of data are assembled for each species: proxies of genetic diversity at the population level, the species distribution range, and various proxies for species dispersal capacity. GenDivRange is presented as an R Shiny application. You will be responsible for assuring the data quality of GenDivRange and perform several data checking protocols. Tasks will include manipulating tabular data, reading scientific publications in the topic of population genetics, extracting data from scientific publications, manipulating geographic coordinates and visualizing them.
Ideal candidates hold an BSc or MSc degree in biology, with a focus on ecology and/or genetics, and have a flair for computer science. Previous experience with Excel, R, QGIS or ArcGIS or similar, and a good command of English (oral and written) are required.
