The Biodiversity and Conservation Biology research unit offers within the SNSF research project "Laying the foundations for drag reduction in stent applications using ferrofluids" for four years, with start in fall 2021, a position as a (w/m/d)
PhD student in fluid mechanics / biomedical flow research
You will develop cutting-edge technology for the reduction of stent thrombosis and restenosis events, based on a multidisciplinary approach linking fluid mechanics and biomedical engineering. The nanotechnology is based on magnetorheological fluids, also called ferrofluids (FFs), which will be used as a lubricant for the reduction of harmful wall shear stresses generated at the stent surface. Your tasks include the experimental measurement of drag reduction of ferrofluid coated pipes and obstacles, as well as the application of this knowledge to design lubricated arterial stents. The design consists in varying the stent strut shape to promote streamlined flow and suppress flow separation, which will inhibit thrombosis and stimulate endothelialization. You will present results at international conferences and publish in scientific journals. You will assist in the teaching/exercise part of an MSc course at ETHZ.

You have a MSc degree in engineering, physics or a similar field, with experience in fluid mechanics and biomedical engineering. You have a very good background in programming (e.g. Matlab) and experimental work and an excellent command of the English language both written and spoken. You are very motivated and work independently and goal-oriented. You will be based in the Environmental Fluid Mechanics team with Dr. Markus Holzner with offices at WSL Birmensdorf and laboratory at ETH Hönggerberg.
