WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF
The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and thus of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards. WSL employs approximately 600 people, of whom 140 work at SLF in Davos.

The Snow Hydrology Research Group in Davos investigates the dynamics of snow water resources and snowmelt in alpine watersheds. To complement our team, we offer a fully funded four-year PhD position starting October 2021.

PhD student in Snow Hydrology #1

Your research focus will be on snow processes within forested environments, continuing our ongoing efforts to improve the representation of snow-vegetation interactions in land surface models. You will conduct fieldwork to quantify forest-snow processes within variable canopy structure with a particular focus on characterizing the three-dimensional aspects of interactions between various processes. To this end, you will work with latest close-range remote sensing technology alongside a range of novel measuring infrastructure developed in the context of preceding dissertation projects. Your experimental data will enable you to revisit and improve current modelling approaches, which will feed into the set of models we use in the context of our various projects. Further information is available at You will collaborate within a network of young and motivated students and postdocs, enabling you to further participate in our other research projects.

You hold a university degree in environmental sciences or in a similar field. Expertise in the use of spatially-distributed land surface and/or snow models is an asset. You are a highly motivated person who appreciates working as part of a team within an international network of collaborators. Excellent command of English is therefore expected.
