Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL

The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is a part of the ETH domain. Approximately 500 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.

The Blue-Green Biodiversity 2020 is a new initiative between WSL and Eawag (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology). Please find more information on our homepage at: press release BGB2020. In the framework of this Project within the research unit ‘Land Change Science’ and research group 'Dynamic Macroecology' of WSL, we are searching for one year (possibility of extension), with a start between August and October 2020 a

Post-Doc BGB2020 Global Macroecology (80-100%)
You will assess spatial biodiversity turnover (change in species composition) along geographical (e.g. latitudinal) and environmental (e.g. temperature) gradients using global biodiversity data (e.g. GBIF, OBIS) from both aquatic and terrestrial systems. You will evaluate to what degree turnover, niche packing and gradient lengths differ between the marine, freshwater and terrestrial study systems for a number of species groups. You will synthesize this information to the question of major differences in species richness between the three study systems. With a passion for scientific understanding of biodiversity to join an interdisciplinary team spread over several institutions, the successful applicant will be based in the research group at WSL in Birmensdorf, but will work in close collaboration with Ole Seehausen from Eawag, Kastanienbaum and close exchange with a team of 11 internationally-oriented scientists from WSL, Eawag and ETH Zürich.

You have a PhD in biology, ecology, environmental sciences, or related fields and, ideally, a background in macroecology or biodiversity. You have strong skills in working with large data sets and modelling, preferably using R (Python). Furthermore, you have a good knowledge in statistics and programming, a good command of English, as well as the capability for scientific paper writing. You are ambitious and highly motivated, used to a high standard of independent, structured, and careful work, and demonstrate a high level of team spirit.

Please submit your complete application online to Jeanine Gehrig, Human Resources WSL, by uploading the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered. For further information, contact Niklaus E. Zimmermann (niklaus.zimmermann@wsl.ch) or Ole Seehausen (ole.seehausen@eawag.ch). The evaluation process will start in July 2020, but the position will remain open until filled. The WSL strives to increase the proportion of women in its employment, which is why qualified women are particularly called upon to apply for this position.
