The Research Unit Snow and Permafrost at SLF is concerned with the physical properties of the material snow and permafrost, with snow – atmosphere interactions and the role of snow, ice and permafrost in the climate system. The core topics of the research group Snow Processes are the surface mass and energy balance over snow and its interaction with the atmospheric boundary layer. This team is offering for 12 months a position as
Measuring and modelling important processes such as snow deposition, drifting and blowing snow as well as the surface energy exchange are part of your responsibilities. You will work on existing and new data sets from automatic weather stations in extreme environments as well as on fundamental problems of drifting and blowing snow. Assisting in developing and maintaining a data platform on snow and weather data in polar and high-mountain regions is also a task of yours. In collaboration with international research partners, you will publish important research results in international scientific journals. In addition, you will provide expert advice for practitioners and your activities will include the supervision of students.
You hold a PhD in natural sciences, physics or meteorology and have proven expertise of the processes occurring in snow and/or the atmospheric boundary layer. Furthermore, you have experience in the eddy correlation technique and turbulence measurements in general as well as in statistical analysis of long-term data series. Numerical modelling knowledge is also an asset. German and English skills and practice working in high alpine terrain are required. You bring solid analytical capacities and a good talent for organisation and communication. You enjoy working in a team that operates at the interface between science and practice.
