The research unit Forest Resources and Management analyses the state of forests and their development. By January 2020 or my mutual agreement, the group “Stand Dynamics and Silviculture” is offering for two years a position as

Specialist in data management (80%)

You will be responsible for the user-friendly recording of forest inventory data as well as their long-term storage within the framework of the projects ”Experimental Forest Management“ and ”Forest Reserve Research”. Your tasks will include the development and support of spatial and relational databases (Post-greSQL/PostGIS) as well as the development of tools for data management. These are a data collection software used in the field and a web application, both programmed in Java. In a small team you contribute to all the steps of data processing, you ensure the interface between the data base and the various user groups, especially the field teams, and take care of the management of data quality. The development of standard routines for data evaluation and the support of project specific analyses are further activities in this position.

You hold a Master’s degree in natural, environmental sciences, geography or computer science. You are familiar with the management of large data sets, PostgreSQL/PostGIS data bases, web technologies and JavaScript. You have knowledge of R and other scripting languages and experience in working with spatial data. Conceptual skills, a flair for implementation, as well as an interest in our research questions (forest growth, forest monitoring, forest dynamics) are expected. You are reliable, work well in a team, have a structured working style and enjoy solving problems together with natural scientists regarding data management in environmental sciences. Good knowledge in German and English are also required.
