The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is a part of the ETH domain. Approximately 500 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.

The research unit Forest Resources and Management analyzes state and changes in forests. In the project “Sustainable development of ecosystem services in Swiss forests (SessFor)“ of the National Research Program 73 we investigate the effect of forest management and climate on different forest services. In this framework we are looking for a
PhD Modelling Forest Services II
You enlarge the stand model SwissStandSim by project specific tasks, i.e. initialization and management (protection forests). Together with the partner-PhD “Modelling Forest Services I” you classify typical forest types in Switzerland based on data from the Swiss National Forest Inventory and define forest management scenarios for these forest types together with stakeholders. You implement the defined scenarios in SwissStandSim and assess the model results based on an indicator system for sustainable forest services. In collaboration with the partner-PhD you scale your findings and recommendations to the national level of Switzerland. The results are expected to be published in international scientific journals. You defend your cumultive doctoral thesis at the ETH Zürich.

You hold a university master in forest or environmental sciences. You are very interested in ecological and economic development of forests and its services. Good knowledge in statistics (preferably in R) is mandatory and experience in statistical modelling is an asset. You have a good command of English and speak at least one national language.
