The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is a part of the ETH domain. Approximately 500 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.
The Research Unit “Forest Resources and Management” records and analyses changes in forests and the landscape and offers in its Research Group “Stand Dynamics and Silviculture” for 6 months an
internship in drought tolerance
Since biotic interactions have the potential to alter the carbon allocation of seedlings, ungulates may affect the drought tolerance of tree species preferentially browsed. In this study you will reveal the respective roles of genetics, environmental and biotic stress in shaping the natural variation of drought tolerance in silver fir. In the WSL isotope facility, you will perform stable isotope and non-structural carbohydrate measurements of silver fir seedlings originating from different populations and thereafter statistically analyse the extent of how water use efficiency and C storage are influenced by genetic factors and ungulate browsing, in order to identify populations with a high adaptive potential.
You have a BSc or MSc degree in forest or nature science or equivalent in the field of eco-physiology and/or quantitative genetics. We expect careful and precise working in the laboratory as well as knowledge of the statistical software R. Good spoken and written English is necessary, German is an advantage.
Please send your complete application to Stefania Pe, Human Resources WSL. Andrea D. Kupferschmid (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Katalin Csilléry (email@example.com) will be happy to answer any questions or offer further information. The WSL strives to increase the proportion of women in its employment, which is why qualified women are particularly called upon to apply for this position.
