Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL

The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is a part of the ETH domain. Approximately 500 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.

The research unit Forest Dynamics investigates the effects of global change on forest ecosystems. The SwissForestLab is a new initiative between WSL, ETH Zurich and partner institutions to foster interdisciplinary science in Swiss forest ecosystem research (www.wsl.ch/swissforestlab/). Starting December 2017 or later, we offer a position within the SwissForestLab for 2 years as
Postdoc in Tree Growth and Extreme Climatic Events
This position aims at understanding the adaptation of trees and forests to extreme climatic events, by analysing tree-ring width series and dendrometer data for short- and long-term tree responses to drought, heat waves and late frost. Existing data of the main tree species in Switzerland will be used and new tree-ring data will be collected in provenance trials. You will publish the results in highly ranked international journals. Furthermore, you will be part of an interdisciplinary team synthesizing a broader review on tolerance and adaptation of trees and forests to climatic extremes.

You must hold a PhD degree, and have a strong proven research background preferably in dendroecology. Experiences in plant physiology, quantitative genetics, and forest ecology are favorable. You are skilled in dealing with large datasets and complex analyses mainly in the statistical software R. You are a team player, communicative and own a driver's license. Speaking a Swiss language is advantageous. Working place will be at WSL Birmensdorf.

Please send your complete application online to Stefania Pe, Human Resources WSL. The evaluation process will start October 15, 2017, but the position remains open until filled. Thomas Wohlgemuth, Tel. +41 (0)44 739 23 17, and Christof Bigler (ETH), Tel. +41 (0)44 632 52 05, will be happy to answer further questions. The WSL strives to increase the proportion of women in its employment, which is why qualified women are particularly called upon to apply for this position.
